Hold on, this GLB has been properly worked over by the people at AMG, it’s not just your pretend version with fancy bodywork they sell to company car drivers.

The GLB is Mercedes’ compact seven-seat SUV, so installing the 302bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, dual-clutch automatic gearbox and the four-wheel drive system found in the A35 hot hatch might not seem the most logical combination, but performance SUVs mean keen drivers with bigger families can have their cake and eat it, With launch control it’ll sprint from 0-62mph in just 5.3 seconds – fast for a seven-seat car.

Put the standard adaptive suspension into Sport+ mode, and the way the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 tackles a series of twisting corners will put a smile on your face.

The twin 10.25-inch screens are super sharp and bright, offering plenty of functionality and great responses to your inputs. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are also standard if you’d prefer to hook up your smartphone, and both systems work just as well as Mercedes’ own. You also get lots of other tech, including keyless operation, LED lights, a panoramic roof, parking sensors and a reversing camera, heated leather sports seats, and a good level of safety tech for a family SUV. Bootspace is pretty minimal with all seven seats in place, but flip the rearmost row down and you’ll have plenty of room for some bulky suitcases.

Mercedes-AMG has thrown everything at this weirdly upright people carrier. You get a lovely panoramic sunroof (not a performance upgrade), 20-inch wheels, adaptive dampers, LED headlights, a Burmester sound system, and the AMG Night package, which turns all of the exterior plastic bits a suitably menacing black. The most obvious visual cue on the car is the panamericana grille.
