"What the Press Say"

The Focus RS’s residual values are proving very strong, something that’s becoming a fast Ford hallmark and a big plus point for owners. We racked up an above-average mileage, so our test car’s has lost a little more value. However, we’ve seen other examples in a similar spec and with more than 10,000 miles on the clock up for sale at more than £30,000

A car that was lauded by all comers, received a maximum five-star road test verdict in this magazine, became the star of many online drift videos and offered a generous 345bhp for just £30,000.

Focus RS options should be picked very carefully if you are specifying a car new or selecting a used example. Ford has recently replaced its fairly poor Sync2 infotainment system with Sync3, which is a marked improvement.

The Ford Focus RS is the latest in a long-line of RS-badged fast Fords – cars on a mission to bring electrifying performance to people of normal means. What we have here is 345bhp from a tuned version of the Mustang’s 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost turbo engine channeled though a six-speed manual and a trick four-wheel drive system, that can make the Ford Focus RS behave like it’s rear- instead of front-driven. Adaptive dampers, launch control, a rear wing and all the usability of a normal five-door Ford Focus.

Let’s start with the engine, because frankly, it’s a revelation. There’s a sniff of lag when you plant your right foot, but that’s closely followed by a wall of torque – 325lb ft or 347lb ft on overboost for 15 seconds. There’s a rally-style warble from the exhausts, not too dissimilar to the old Focus RS’ five-pot in fact, and an intense turn of pace. The sole-choice manual gearbox is a delight to use, not as quick in a drag race as a twin-clutch auto, but so much more involving.

The Focus’ trump card is its four-wheel drive system that can send up to 70 per cent of the power to the rear axle, and then up to 100 per cent of that to either of the rear wheels. Toggle up through Normal, Sport, Track and eventually Drift mode and the RS get progressively more lairy.
