The BMW 320d is still a great drivers’ car and now more refined than ever, too. Plenty of practicality, efficiency and badge image means it ticks all the right boxes, and at £33,365 for this M Sport auto it’s affordable, if not cheap. The 3 Series has always been the best-in-class when it comes to driving dynamics, and it’s still brilliant on the road. The 187bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine serves up smooth revving performance.

The styling changes inside and out on this revised 3 Series are minimal, but it still remains one of the sharpest looking saloons on sale – especially with the sportier body kit and 19-inch alloy wheels. Go for M Sport spec and there’s lots on offer, including the sportier styling, leather, DAB radio, Bluetooth, cruise and climate control and sat-nav that works with the gearbox to pre-select the perfect gear based on where you are on the road.

M Sport adds firmer suspension, larger 18in wheels, and a more aggressive bodykit outside.

2015 saw a mid-life facelift. This included an update to most of the engines in the range and also added some small exterior styling tweaks. Other updates included some minor recalibrations of the electric power steering and adjustable dampers and revisions to interior surfaces and standard sat-nav across the whole range.

For a car so frugal, the amount of fun you can have in a 320d is almost indecent.  It starts with a snugly low driving position, the leather seats offering comfort and good lateral support. The 320d’s strong grip and keen turn-in allow you to work the front tyres hard, and the excellent body control and engagingly rear-biased handling egg you on to drive it like a performance saloon, not a rep runaround.
