Numerous 5 star reviews - Simply sumptuous. Even after spending a short time behind the wheel of the new TT, you're left with a lasting impression of just how pleasing it would be to live with every day.

The Audi TT Roadster takes on the BMW Z4 and Mercedes SLK in the premium roadster class, but beats both when it comes to fuel economy, performance and price. We think it’s the best-looking of the three, too, with its chiseled features and gorgeous minimalist interior.

Now it’s time for a look at the TT for buyers as fuel-conscious as they are image-conscious, the diesel-powered 2.0-litre TDI Ultra. It’s forecast to be the biggest seller of the range in the UK.

If the on-paper figures are anything to go by, the black-pump TT puts forward a pretty compelling case for itself: 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds, a top speed of 147mph yet combined fuel economy of 58.9mpg and tax-friendly CO2 emissions of 110g/km.

There’s 182bhp on tap but more pertinently 280lb ft of torque (more than a Seat Leon Cupra) and it’s the latter that makes it a surprisingly brisk car. When you need it, there’s rapid and pleasantly lag-free acceleration available and when you don’t the TDI lump is smooth and hushed. The new 2015 Audi TT TDI diesel sounds okay too.

One more thing. I had to try the roof, rain or not. It takes just 10 seconds to open or close electronically, and you can do this with the TT  moving at up to 31mph. It’s a three-layer fabric construction and very good at keeping wind noise out when closed.

TT Roadster is underpinned by the firm's MQB architecture. Designed to be light and strong, it results in a weight-saving of around 100kg over the old TT. Thanks to Audi's clever MQB underpinnings, this TT is as good to drive as it is to look at. Not only does it benefit from sharp and engaging handling, a useful weigh-saving over its predecessor means it's faster and more efficient than before.

In front of the driver is the foot-and-a-bit wide LCD ‘Virtual Cockpit’ instrument panel you’ve already heard so much about, with switchable displays including different layouts for the tacho and speedometer and a full-bleed navigation map (which isn’t always as easy to follow as you might hope). The display is sharp and attractive, impervious to both bright sunlight and polarised sunglasses and straightforward to command, using a mixture of steering wheel controls and the latest generation of Audi’s familiar turn ’n’ click MMI controller near the gearlever. After a bit of trial and error even the most technophobic of drivers will have the measure of it. Circular air vents which feature integrated control functions and displays for the air conditioning are another highlight.

Some things seem too good to be true, and we wouldn't blame you for thinking the TT Ultra was one of them. Not only is the diesel model cheaper to buy and run then both its petrol counterparts, but it's also predicted to hold on to its value better,
