Audi S5 Coupe. Come on now, get excited. It’s got a turbocharged V6, all-wheel drive, eight gears and 349bhp. It’ll do 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds. That’s about what a Ferrari F355 takes to do the same dash, if you’re fond of duffing up old supercars.

Under the bonnet is a new turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine. The 60deg unit forms part of the modular EA838 range of engines. With 349bhp, the new engine delivers 21bhp more than its predecessor, but more important is a 45lb ft lift in torque, to 369lb ft, produced between 1380 and 4500rpm. Drive is sent to all four wheels via the latest version of Audi’s Torsen torque-sensing quattro four-wheel drive system. Audi claims a 0-62mph time of 4.7sec, which is 0.4sec quicker than the old S5 Sportback. Despite the extra performance, fuel consumption is improved by 2.0mpg at 38.7mpg.

The engine is a lovely thing. There’s power throughout the rev range and the noise is pleasingly natural.

S5 exudes understated confidence, with only a few styling cues to differentiate it from lesser S Line models. These include the S5-specific single-frame chrome grille, satin finish wing mirrors and subtly different front and rear bumpers with a matt diffuser insert.
