Small performance SUVs are, as we know, very much in vogue right now. Say hello to the new RS Q3 - the fastest small SUV you can buy, with a near-400bhp five-cylinder engine. Quattro permanent all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic gearbox deliver 0-62mph in a hyper hatch-baiting 4.5 seconds. 

The Audi RS Q3 is part of a new fad for extremely fast and powerful SUVs. It’s not just a reheated version of the Q3 with more power, though – just like the Audi RS3 hot hatch, it’s a distinctive and re-engineered model. 

As standard the RS Q3 rides 10mm lower than a regular Q3, on RS-tuned suspension. Aesthetic changes include new bumpers and skirts, flared wheel arches and big wheels. Oh, and a dual-exit exhaust, riding on 20in alloy wheels (21s on Audi Sport Edition and Vorsprung models). The five-cylinder engine is the headline feature of the car, and it’s not just on paper, as it dominates the driving experience. It sounds better than any of its rivals by a long way, especially at higher revs, and the performance it brings is superb in any gear. You can buy an optional sports exhaust, which is great if you want to hear the engine even better.

Inside, front sports seats, 10.1in infotainment screen and 12.3in virtual cockpit instrument cluster, with an additional RS-specific screen that puts rev count, speed and other performance metrics right in your eyeline and a flat-bottomed steering wheel with two customisable RS driving modes (a button on the steering wheel to swap between them) makes it easier to switch from regular driving to maximum performance.
