Outgoing 4 seater had a constant 12 month waiting list, until it was discontinued in 2020. Unfortunately, the Jimny fell foul of European emissions regulations, so sales stopped almost as soon as they started. But fast-forward to 2021, and while a second-hand Jimny is a much-sought after machine, Suzuki is selling it as a new model again, but this time in the shape of the Jimny Commercial.

Suzuki is able to do this thanks to the less stringent emissions legislation that commercial vehicles must meet. So the SUV's two back seats have been ditched and replaced by a flat cargo area that has 863 litres of space and a payload of 150kg. As it turns out, this is no real hardship, because Suzuki customer feedback has shown that many Jimny SUV owners permanently folded the back seats down anyway. The only other change inside is the addition of a steel mesh partition to prevent items falling forward into the cabin.

‘Want one’ tends to happen about three seconds after clapping eyes on the Jimny. Cuter than a Jeep Renegade and as sturdy looking as the Mercedes G-Class (but at six-tenths the scale), it’s one of those instantly desirable pieces of design.

Underneath, the Jimny is still based around a traditional steel, ladder frame chassis, but it’s a new, stiffer foundation for 2018, supporting rigid front and rear axles with separate differentials, comes with desirable off-roading tech such as Hill Descent Control and brake limited slip differential (LSD) traction control that automatically brakes slipping wheels to redistribute power to the other side of the car to gain traction. It also has a low-ratio gearbox and rigid axle suspension. There is no turbo, no hybrid assistance, and no diesel. As standard, you get a manual gearbox with five speeds, a four-cylinder petrol engine with 100bhp and 95lb ft, and 200cc more capacity than its predecessor and a low-range transfer box for 4x4 scrambling. You can spec a four-speed auto, but it’s even more sluggish than the manual and fewer than ten per cent of Jimny-folk will bother.

We tried the Jimny on gravel roads and tough, rocky terrain, and we're pleased to report that nothing has changed in terms of the little 4x4's ability in the rough. There was nothing that could stop it, and the Jimny will easily put to shame rival 4x4s that cost thousands of pounds more. The rigid axle suspension means you're bounced around the cabin like a pinball on rocky terrain, but the Jimny just keeps going, no matter what you throw at it.

Sweeping A-roads and a dollop of urban looping, and we saw an estimated 42mpg, while relentlessly flogging the air-con on a sweltering day. Driven carefully, the Jimny is easily a 45mpg everyday proposition

The Jimny’s theme of majoring on no-nonsense utilitarian hardiness with just a smattering of twee touches continues inside. Suzuki Jimny is functional rather than fun. There’s swathes of hard, scratchy plastics might not look pretty, but will happily stand up to a harsh life. If everything gets covered in mud then no bother – you can easily wipe it down and carry on.
