The appeal of a Range Rover badge is stronger than ever. The Range Rover Sport is a good choice if you want a posh looking and feeling SUV that’s brilliant for family life. Other models are even sportier to drive but few can match the Range Rover’s mix of agility, luxury and impressive off-road ability.

It’s always set a high dynamic benchmark, while its interior quality and sheer desirability are hard to match in this fiercely fought sector. Entry-level models come with 20in alloy wheels, xenon headlights, keyless entry, front foglights and a reversing camera as standard, while inside there is perforated leather upholstery, heated seats all round, lane departure warning and Jaguar Land Rover's InControl infotainment system complete with sat-nav.

Land Rover has applied a series of mid-life updates, introducing a cleaner but more powerful engine, updated infotainment system and some extra kit. Despite the jump in power, the Range Rover Sport is no faster from a standstill. Not that it really needed to be, as the punchy six-cylinder model sprints from 0-60mph in 6.8 seconds. On the road, the extra torque does help with overtaking, as the huge 700Nm slug comes in progressively from 1,500rpm. Plant your right foot at 50mph and the brilliant eight-speed auto shifts down a couple of cogs and propels you down the road. It never pins you back in your seat, but glance down at the dials and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how quickly you gain speed.

It’s when the road gets twisty that the Range Rover Sport really shines, though. This has always been a fine handling SUV, and the updated model is no different. Our Dynamic model features Land Rover’s Adaptive Dynamics and Dynamic Response systems, which combine to make this bulky 4x4 handle like something half its size. The steering is sharp and direct, too, providing decent feedback through the leather-trimmed wheel.

The Range Rover Sport has an interior that feels expensive and makes you feel special. Leather is pretty much everywhere you look and the two-tone colour options help brighten up the cabin.

Every Range Rover Sport comes with Land Rover’s top-of-the-range Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. It is basically two 10-inch high-resolution screens stacked on top of each other. The top display is used for the car’s satellite navigation, and it’s controlled entirely via the touchscreen. That leaves the bottom screen to deal with a variety of other systems. Primarily it’s used to fine-tune the ventilation system, but swiping from left to right brings up a plethora of other menus such as the Range Rover Sport’s Terrain Response off-road system. In addition to those two central screens, you get another 12.3-inch display that takes the place of conventional dials in the car’s instrument binnacle.

It’s shorter, lower and weighs 45kg less than the regular Range Rover, and it feels a whole lot more wieldy on the road. Compared with the old Sport, it’s up to 420kg lighter, which explains why it feels so much more agile.
