"What the Press Say"

The new Land Rover Defender has a mountain to climb. Yeah, a real mountain, of course, because awesome off-road ability is an absolute necessity. But also a metaphorical mountain. It's got to replace the old one. A vehicle that was very widely adored, for the exact same reasons it was almost impossible to justify buying. So the new one has to be as capable off-road as the old one. And it has to evoke the old one's heritage, which is why it looks the way it does. Those two things were probably quite difficult, but if anyone could succeed, Land Rover's engineers and designers would.

The exterior design is, we think, masterful. It invokes the old one yet it's completely modern. The boxiness is just right for a hardcore 4x4 SUV. The bodywork is structural – the chassis being an all-new aluminium monocoque rather than the old ladder on frame construction. The whole shell is immensely strong. So's the suspension it rides on. It shares principles with the Discovery's, but few parts.

The firm's entire success has been founded on making vehicles that are so capable they go well beyond the normal needs of the buyers. The Defender is the pinnacle of that.

Land Rover has aced the latest Defender, which combines rugged go-anywhere ability with new levels of civility. Land Rover has silenced the doubters and produced a Defender worthy of the famous name. It’s clearly a more modern and luxurious car than before, but the Defender has lost none of its ability to tackle whatever conditions are thrown its way. Aside from the obvious shared styling elements, the latest Landie is worlds apart from its more agricultural ancestor.

Trim levels move from entry-level Defender though to S, SE and HSE. There’s also an opportunity to upgrade to the X-Dynamic equipment line.

You can operate the various off-road modes via the touchscreen if you wish, but Land Rover has cleverly incorporated the function into a single physical button on the dash, which you then toggle through using one of the air-con dials - it helps to maintain a clean, uncluttered feel to the cabin. Land Rover has done a great job in bringing the Defender into the 21st century. There’s a little nod to the previous model in terms of the overall look.

Standard equipment across the range includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated seats and power-folding door mirrors. Stepping up to S trim adds 19-inch wheels and upgraded upholstery, while SE and HSE cars feature luxuries such as a premium 400w Meridian audio system with ten speakers, additional leather trim in the cabin and a sliding panoramic roof.

The 10-inch touchscreen is the slickest we’ve yet seen from JLR. The new Pivi Pro system allows over-the-air software updates and the latest Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
