The Audi TT backs up its head-turning looks with an engaging drive and plenty of tech

The third-generation Audi TT Coupe – launched in 2014 – had a lot to live up based on the success of the models that came before it. The first two models were sales smash hits, but Audi’s stuck to its winning formula, evolving the original car’s now-iconic look and blending it with its latest modern look, The TT wears modern-looking LED headlights and taillights with some neat touches including directional indicators that swipe across the tail-lights rather than flash on and off – a feature that has become something of an Audi hallmark.

TT received a few mild tweaks in 2018 to make it look more aggressive and feel sportier to drive. This new model is slightly faster than the outgoing version, but the most noticeable tweaks come in the form of remodelled bumpers and a few changes to its minimalist interior.

In front of the driver is the foot-and-a-bit wide LCD ‘Virtual Cockpit’ instrument panel you’ve already heard so much about, with switchable displays including different layouts for the tacho and speedometer and a full-bleed navigation map (which isn’t always as easy to follow as you might hope). The display is sharp and attractive, impervious to both bright sunlight and polarised sunglasses and straightforward to command, using a mixture of steering wheel controls and the latest generation of Audi’s familiar turn ’n’ click MMI controller near the gearlever. After a bit of trial and error even the most technophobic of drivers will have the measure of it. Circular air vents which feature integrated control functions and displays for the air conditioning are another highlight.

Produces 194bhp and pulls strongly from low revs, with more than enough mid-range grunt for quick overtakes. 0-62mph takes 6.6 seconds – fast enough to worry small hot hatches such as the Ford Fiesta ST. Comes as standard with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and it's our pick of the range.
