Forget the Audi RS6 and RS7 – if you want the most expensive car Audi’s RS division makes, you should check out the RS Q8. Yes, it’s a massive, practical, comfortable SUV, but it’s also ridiculously fast and good fun to drive.

Audi’s crack at the SUV-that-thinks-it’s-a-supercar segment. this is a full-house RS model, so gets the same lunatic 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine as the RS6 estate… producing 592bhp and 590lb ft of torque. That means 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, 0-124mph in 13.7 seconds, and a limited top speed of 155mph. Insert wide-eye emoji here.

It’s a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 that’s shared with the Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga. In the Audi, it produces 600hp and a whopping 800Nm of torque. All this helped the RS Q8 scoop the Best Sporty SUV award.

it’s fairly astonishing to drive. Nothing this size and shape has any right to corner, sprint and generally behave like this when you prod it.

This all comes as no surprise given the way it looks. Aggressive? It’s like The Undertaker on wheels. That huge grille looks big enough to hoover up a few hatchbacks without a second thought and if you thought 22-inch wheels were big, check out the RS Q8’s optional 23-inch rims.

The Audi RS Q8’s cabin is a nice blend of sporty details and minimalist design, but you can shift the balance towards the racy end of the spectrum with the RS Design Pack. This adds extra contrasting stitching and some suede-like Alcantara trim for the steering wheel and gear selector.

Standard equipment is comprehensive, as you’d expect for its six-figure price point, so pretty much all of Audi’s trademark features are included – matrix LED headlights, 22-inch alloy wheels, Audi’s top-drawer heated, ventilated and electrically operated sports seats, a full suite of interior displays made up of the usual virtual cockpit and dual-touchscreen MMI systems.
